This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Hype 1, Me 0.

Illuminae caught so much hype last year – and my desire to read it went down the drain. Yes, I was excited at first. I loved the emails from the publisher with the small reveals, leading up to publication. But some time around BEA – I said NOPE and moved on.

I mean, I didn’t even read reviews! Which is sad, on many levels. Plus, 599 pages? What.Even.

Anyway, I shouldn’t be surprised that Illuminae won. But I thought that at least ACOTAR would give it a run for its money. So, what convinced me? See beloooooow!

I loved Illuminae. It was the most unique book I have ever read. The storyline keeps you at the edge of your seat the entire time. I know my heart was beating pretty darn fast in quite a few scenes. The way it was told was so cool. There were pictures made out of code and really funny dialogue between characters chatting through IM’s. I still don’t know how the authors managed to come up with such an intricate plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves YA.

Oh my god you need to read Illuminae! It’s one if wild roller coaster of awesomeness. Sci-fi, i spaceships, crazy artificial intelligence computer systems, long distance love and fighting for survival… And so much more. I swear you won’t be let down. Granted, the format is different. But it’s fairly easy to get past it and the story sucks you right in and before you know it you’re turning the last page.

GAH I liked all of these that I read (which is 3 out of 4). There is no bad choice here, basically. That said, I am going to beg you to read Illuminae, and here is why:
1. It is so unique, I guarantee you have never read another book like it.
2. It is genius- from start to finish. You will feel things you can’t even believe, but the crazy part is, none of it is from “typical” storytelling methods.
3. It’s intense. It may look big (because 599 pages is) BUT it’s all in atypical format so it’s really just the length of a regular book, and it flies by because you can’t NOT continue reading!
4. Brad Pitt said so.
5. The hype is legit.

I LOVED Illuminae. It was really unique. The way it was told kept me on the edge of my seat. It deserves all the hype it got.

And then, Twitter

I guess ACOTAR DID give it a run for it’s money on twitter!

What Convinced me

Well, sheer numbers for one. But I loved everyone’s enthusiasm for the book. EVERYONE was raving about how unique it was. Not only the formatting, but the story itself. And like Shannon said, Brad Pitt said so!

My Thoughts

Honestly, I don’t even know how to review this book. I was trying to explain everything to my husband, and I would have to back up because of one small detail that I missed in my explanation. Seriously, there is so much going on it’s unreal.

What really took me by surprise was how DARK it was. I freaking LOVED it. (I wish I would have known, because I probably would have picked it up sooner) call me morbid, but I kind of like it when “important” characters die; I eat that crap up! There were some parts that were hard to read, and just SAD.

I will say though, that the formatting took some getting used to. It took about 100 pages for me to really get into it. Another aspect, even though the data is complied in order, I kept flipping back and reading the dates on everything. Why? Not sure. Maybe to see the timeline and make sure I was following. If I see dates, I HAVE to make sure everything lines up. Weird? Yes. Also, black pages with white font? MY EYES HATE ME.

Characters wise, I loved Kady and Ezra. I honestly didn’t think I was able to connect to the characters, based on formatting alone, but I was WRONG. I especially loved how their relationship developed over the course of events, even though they HAD a history.

Does it deserve the hype?

Well, yes. Based on the unique formatting alone. But the story was just flat-out amazing. It’s enthralling, to say the least. And the ending had me laughing hysterically and full of manic floored because it was just brilliant. I guess you can say I have boarded the train and will be chugging along with the rest of y’all. Am I kicking myself for not reading it sooner? Why yes, yes I am.

I am anxious & excited for the next book. I can’t wait to see what this duo will bring us next. Considering.. well, everything that happened.

I absolutely love your posts, especially how you write your reviews. SO CREATIVE! You’ve convinced by to read this book too. I was seriously on the fence. I’m not to crazy about Kaufman’s THESE BROKEN STARS series…I know I’m probably a rarity. But I do enjoy Kristoff’s books! And I’m with you on the page count. Yikes! But it sounds like epic good fun and I’m a fan of dark books. In fact, the darker the better. I’ll add this to my TBR list.

Aw thank you! That is SO awesome to hear! And I do hope you love it too, as much as I did and everyone else! 🙂

Actually, I read this book so fast! Some pages are zero text or very minimal, it never felt like 599 pages.

I am SO excited for book two! I have NO IDEA the direction the story will go and that scares me LOL and I have this weird soft spot for AIDEN. I mean, he is the perfect example on WHY WE DON’T WAIT AI.

It was definitely the formatting. I gave it like 100 pages but I couldn’t get through it no matter how hard I tried. But I’m debating trying the audio because I’ve heard the audio is phenomenal and I wouldn’t struggle with the formatting as much that way. I feel like such a black sheep lol.

Not going to lie, I am pretty excited that Brad and I convinced you 😉 Seriously, I am SO glad you loved it. You’re right, it is so, so dark- definitely darker than I was expecting- but like you, I thought that was a good thing! I am so, so excited/scared for the next book, because what on earth (non-earth, I suppose is better) are these freaking genius authors going to throw at us next!? Dare I even ask!?

haha yes! I was so happy when everyone’s comments were coming in because the PASSION!

I wasn’t expecting it to be as dark as it was. One could argue I should have expected it, because some parts in Amie’s other series are dark too. But, I didn’t.
