A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.

When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I am a huge Kimberly Derting fan. I loved her Body Finder series and when I saw The Taking on Edelweiss, I immediately downloaded it.

One thing I have come to love about Kimberly’s writing is how engaging it is. Her books are always fun and original, and the fact that two of her three series take place where I grew up is a small bonus. The Taking, while fun and suspenseful, didn’t quite make it to the LOVE category though.

What I loved about The Taking was the suspense. I mean, imagine waking up with 5 years of your life gone? Not only finding that everyone and everything in your life is different, but you are NOT? Trying to unravel the mystery about what happened to Kyra; then trying to figure out who did it, who else is involved and what EXACTLY was going on was so fun. But the rest? Eh, not so much.

I didn’t really feel connected to Kyra’s life BEFORE The Taking. Since we only get a Prologue, it was just a barely there brush up on what her life was like. I felt like this was a disadvantage because I didn’t really feel the loss, ya know? Also, after 5 years and suddenly reappearing, there were so speculations on where the hell she was. No news cast. No one really asking questions. I thought the pressure on her to just accept her “new life” and move on was unrealistic and heartless. It just seemed like no one really cared that this girl had just mysteriously reappeared after 5 years. Exactly the same.

I liked Kyra, I did. I felt so bad for her and everything that she was going through. But I thought she was a little too bitter and a selfish Princess. Maybe it’s just me, but I would have been a little bit more freaked out about everything as a whole, instead of her attitude towards her mother, stepfather, baby brother and everyone else.. Then again, I can’t really say, with certainty, how I would react. Since it obviously didn’t feel like 5 years to her, I can see where she might be a little bit torn up about everything going on. I also thought she was too wrapped up in Tyler

Moving on to the romance. It was pretty insta-lovey. Okay, a lot. I liked Tyler but I just didn’t fall in love with him. Especially in 7 days. I honestly feel like the romance was there for convenience. Because of what happens and what they discover about Kyra. Hard to explain without spoilers.

Another thing that bothered me? All the freaking UNANSWERED questions. Was I expecting them all? Well, no. But I was expecting something, damn it. Which irritated me more because now I am DYING for answers, in turn, the next book.

Overall – I did like it. There was just too many things going on that kept me from loving it. Still, I recommend it. I love Kimberly Derting’s writing. So, yes, I will be continuing on with this series. I need answers!

I really loved the first two books in The Body Finder series (haven’t had a chance to finish the series yet) so I know what you mean about wanting to pick up more from this author. Glad the suspense was there but it’s too bad on some of the other issues. I hope to give it a read someday though!
