When eighteen-year-old teleporter Ember Pierce wakes up in a Los Angeles hospital, she remembers only the basics: she’s been trained by the government as a spy, she’s sent on dangerous missions, and her last assignment—the one that landed her in the hospital—was a setup.
Caden Hawthorne has spent the past ten months of his life grieving Ember’s death. So when she shows up in his room like an apparition, he can’t believe his eyes. But this Ember is different. Her hair is longer, her skin is paler, her gaze is haunted. She tells him what he’s already begun to suspect: someone he trusted betrayed her.
Now, uncertain who is friend and who is foe, Ember and Caden face the toughest mission of their lives—to stay together and survive, as they run from danger toward an unknown future
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The Decaying Empire was one of my most anticipated releases of 2015. I really, really enjoyed The Vanishing Girl, and after the HUGE freaking cliffhanger, I would have done just about anything to dive into The Decaying Empire. Now, while there are many, many things I enjoyed about this – I didn’t love AS MUCH as it’s predecessor.
Before I really get into the nitty-gritty – I have to say how I just LOVE that this is a New Adult novel. Personally, I haven’t read many that aren’t strictly romance, so it’s just damn NICE to read a New Adult Science Fiction.
The Decaying Empire starts literally right where The Vanishing Girl left off – 10 months later. I was so happy about this – because I really didn’t want half the book to be full of angst because of HOW the ending went. However, I was a little thrown off by Caden’s and even Dane’s POV being added – in 3rd person, no less – I was really shocked!
I would have to describe the plot as this – so much but NOTHING happening at the same time. Stakes are high. People die. Betrayal, secrets all that FUN CRAP. But it was the same the WHOLE TIME. There were parts where I was just flippin bored out of my mind! So frustrating because the first book was just NON STOP.
Besides the fact that these two are basically ON THE RUN – there was a lot of growth in their relationship and individually. I had a hard time shipping their relationship at first, so I love that they had a chance to really grow and open up to each other. This is one romance I will not get tired of – it has really grown on me.
Ember is not the same person. She has always been tough, a bad ass, smart and witty. But after everything that’s happened? There are more layers added to her armor, and she really steps up. Caden. *sigh* Caden has a lot of insecurities and most of them were brought to light. He really does love Ember, and would stop at nothing to protect her and stay with her – even if it does mean he has to turn his back on the other people in his life he cares about.
Now. I mentioned above that we get Caden’s POV. I hated it. I hated how it was in third person and I hated that it was NOT consistent. Yet at the same time – I feel like it was necessary for us as the reader to really understand him and why he is doing the things he does. Contradicting, I know. But it is what it is.
The ending didn’t leave us a quite the cliffhanger as The Vanishing Girl – but I was shaking my kindle yelling, “I FREAKING KNEW ITTTTTTTTTTTT!!” The ONE time I wish I would have told someone ALL MY THEORIES ahead of time. So, there is that.
Overall – I enjoyed this sequel! While I thought the plot was kind of boring and redundant at times; I really love how brutal this world is and the characters IN IT. I recommend the series!
