Voted Most Likely to Succeed, Melanie Bartlett ended up anything but. The down-on-her-luck single mom wants a complete do-over—is that too much to ask? With her family long gone from River Bend, strong, independent Mel is as surprised as anyone to end up in the quaint small town she once called home. But with her friends, Jo and Zoe, by her side, and a comfortable room at Miss Gina’s quirky bed-and-breakfast, she just might have turned the corner on a new life.
Wyatt Gibson never liked the big city. River Bend suits the ruggedly handsome builder just fine. Wyatt knows he’s home, even if that means being charmed by the appearance of Melanie and her spunky, adorable daughter. Is Wyatt’s calm devotion—even amid a coming storm—enough to convince Mel she may have found a home to call her own, a family that never leaves, and a true love to last a lifetime?
I received this book for free from The Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I’ve always held a soft spot for small town romances. I love the vibe, the gossip just everything about it. Other than that, and the second chance aspect, I had no idea what to expect from Doing it Over. Which is a good thing, too, because there was a lot that took me by surprise!
We meet Melanie on her way to her 10-year high school reunion, her child Hope, and beat up car in tow. After arriving, she decides to stay and work with Ms. Gina and the inn, and of course, there’s the budding romance with Wyatt! However, things don’t go as planned and soon, her past catches up to her.
There are many things I adored about this book! I loved the romance. It was slow building, but their chemistry is instant. Both had their own reasons for not wanting a relationship, but the more time spent with each other, the closer they get. I especially loved how Wyatt was a solid rock for Melanie when things really started to hit the fan with Hope’s father popping up in the picture.
Besides the romance, I loved all the characters. While the story is primarily Melanie’s, we get chapters with Jo and Zoey as well. Both Jo and Zoey plan a huge part of Melanie’s life, being her best friends from high school. I can only assume that their stories are next, which was why we got chapters from their POV. Ms. Gina, too, was a hilarious addition.
The mystery aspect was the main thing I wasn’t expecting. There were several different things happening to, and around Melanie, and we slowly get the pieces to figure out who was behind them all. My first guess was right, it was fun to see how the characters handled it all.
All in all – I quite enjoyed Doing it Over. It was such a fun, sweet and romantic small town romance. I’m excited for the other books in the series. It will be fun to revisit all the characters. I recommend it!
