In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.
When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.
Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.
Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?
*Spoilers for Book 1, Angelfall*
Angelfall (review) was one of my favorite reads in 2013. It’s so dark, disturbing and horrifying. But I loved it. I loved that Susan took this leap and wrote something completely different. She is an amazing writer and her gift continues in the pages in World After.
World After starts right where Angelfall left off. Penryn is back with the resistance; and her family, with everyone believing she’s dead. Right from the start, we are thrown into action and it doesn’t stop. You barely have time to take a breath before something else happens.
And if you thought Angelfall was ruthless, just wait.
Susan really packs a punch when it comes to horrifying THINGS. If she is holding back, I would almost be scared to read what else she has in mind. Seriously. Not only is it, er scary, she paints a perfect picture, leaving just enough for your imagination to come out and play.
There were so many questions that I had at the end of Angelfall that were, thankfully, answered in here in World After. The experiments, why the angles are there PERIOD and why they did what they did to Paige. Of course, as we learn more, more things come about that needed answering.
Since the book is told in Penryn’s POV, I felt like I had a slight disadvantage when it came to Raffe. Which is why I loved the “flashbacks.” Since his sword has “bonded” with Penryn, it was able to show her things about Raffe, and his past as well. Some scenes were pretty horrific while others, made me smile.
Sorry Raffe fans, it takes us some time to get him back into the fold.
Although we see Raffe around and see more of his past with the sword, he doesn’t actually make an appearance until about 3/4 into the book. But let me tell you, it was worth it. Because a.) I loved seeing Penryn on her own. We know she is bad ass, brave and all that in between, but there is something about what she does on her own, that really stands out for me. b.) Their reunion was priceless.
If you know me well, you know that I am not always about a HEA. But with these two, I want it. Sadly, with the world literally crumbling around them, I don’t think it’ll happen in the near future. If you read the books, you know why Raffe doesn’t want to LOVE Penryn, or want her period, but I think he does. In my opinion, it’s there whether or not he wants it, ya know? Anyway. He isn’t the nicest guy, but he’s real in the sense that he tells it like it is.
My Peeve – My only gripe is that there was little to no summary from Angelfall. Since it has been over a year since reading it, it took me awhile to get back into the swing of things and remember all the small details. So, I recommend a re read before diving into this one, just to be safe.
Overall – I loved it. If you haven’t read this, or started this series, you need to ASAP.
