Romantic and action-packed, The Replaced is the gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy.

Kyra hasn't been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now, on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted—all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive but is in the hands of a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, Kyra knows it's a risk to go after him. What if it's a trap? And worse, what if the returned Tyler isn't the same boy she lost?

Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series, The Replaced is both chilling and explosive, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills that will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Taking, while enjoyable, wasn’t my favorite Kimberly Derting book. I liked it well enough, but my sole reason for heading into The Replaced was my hunt for answers. I am happy I got some – but overall? EH. All the issues I had with the first book rolled over into The Replaced; bringing along some new and irritating things.

It’s been a long time since I have thought of a book as having SECOND BOOK SYNDROME but that is exactly how I feel about The Replaced.. As I mentioned, we do get some answers that were left unanswered from The Taking, I would even go as far to say giving us answers we hadn’t even thought to ask yet. There is more action too – and we are introduced to a whole new cast of secondary characters and even an interesting plot twist thrown in. But I was so frustrated!

My two biggest issues are two major plot points – and both are equally there for further the plot and set things up for book 3. I really dislike it when things are inserted for the purpose to move things along. If the chain of events comes natural, then I am all for it. But it felt so forced!

One – Tyler. I didn’t wholly buy into their romance in The Taking, because so little time passed when the declarations of love were spouted (don’t get me started on the whole brother thing – I didn’t even tough that subject before). So the fact that 2/3 of this book was the crew actually looking for Tyler was just down right irritating. Not to mention, once he is found? View Spoiler »

My other issue is Simon. Not him per se, but the possibility of a love triangle in the making. WHY? I don’t mind love triangles, I really don’t. But really?

Those two major issues aside – I was not a fan of the pacing either. I ran into a situation similar with a book I read a few weeks ago, where there was so much going on but nothing at the same time. I do feel that Kyra has grow up a little – and is really starting to come to turns with her new reality. The ending too, revealed a lot about what is to come in the third book and did leave us with a small cliffhanger.

Overall – The Replaced was just an okay read for me. I will be reading book 3 – I just HAVE to know how things wrap up. And Derting is great a finishing off series.

It’s a good series – not BAD but nothing like her Body Finder series, at all. I hope you get to it soon and enjoy!
