Don’t Sweat.  Don’t Laugh.  Don’t draw attention to yourself.

And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him.  He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood.  Gene is a human, and he knows the rules.  Keep the truth a secret.  It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him.  He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Review

Well, first let me start off by saying that this was one entertaining read. I laughed SO HARD and was blow away but it’s complete and utter ridiculous-ness. Credit should be given where credit it due though; this book is DIFFERENT. I’ll admit, it started out relatively good. I was immediately draw in and I was anxious to know more about this world that our protagonist lives in. That lasted until…. about page 9. There my friends, is when we start to see things get weird.

Weird is fine. Whatever. But this was just….Too weird.

I seriously had a hard time finishing this. Set aside the weirdness (wrist scratching [laugh], ear rubbin [hugs/congrats], snapping heads [excitement] arm pit kisses and many more) it was inconsistent. To start off, why was his father bit when everyone else is basically mutilated? From the description of these people, their lust for heper flesh is basically insatiable, so how did he get away? One minute we have pretty normal (albeit weird) people to vicious monsters the next. I’m sorry, maybe it’s because I’m biased but Vampires are supposed to have heightened senses. You’re telling me they don’t know the different between one of their own vs a heper? That your cover can be blown because you forgot to rinse your pits? Or got a little too hot in class and had a little sweat? Or you yawned? C’mon! Also, what happens when you hold a sneeze in? Or you need to cough, and can’t? Your eyes water. You crinkle your nose, right? YOU CAN’T NOT SNEEZE. OR COUGH. Have you tried to NOT smile? Me, personally, I’ll start busting up laughing. What happens if you get sick? Or hurt? To me it just isn’t logical. You can’t train your body to do such things. It’s ridiculous!

There was no back story. I have NO IDEA where they are located. Important? No, not really. But I would like to know. We know that hepers are practically extinct and it’s obvious WHY but WHERE DID THE PEOPLE COME FROM. AND, How are they still there? How are you adding ranks to your race? Obviously, due to their heper lust (and their extinction) they can’t BITE anyone (well, except daddy-o) so they don’t MAKE them, or do they? DO THEY HAVE BABIES!? And if you kiss using your elbow and armpit.. Imagine THAT usual. *scratches wrist* Oh, and blood. Geez, almost forgot THAT. Can they live without it? I guess so! because the only blood they get is from whats left over from their raw meat. So it seems to me it isn’t essential for their survival. They just go CRAZY with heper lust and want to eat them. Like a.. rare delicacy. They really don’t even have to smell it (blood) or BO or witness facial expressions If word is out there that a heper is around, they go crazy. It’s just weird! There were some attempted plot “twists” but not once was I surprised. The only thing I was thrown by was the ability to recreate more weirdness.

I didn’t really understand our protagonist, Gene. What’s your motivation dude? Seriously. As far as he is concerned, he’s the only heper left. He has to go through a rigorous morning routine to make sure he looks like the people. He knows if he is found out, he’s dead. So WHY? Why continue on with life? What type of life do you plan on living? How miserable and lonely that would be. THEN, while at the Hunt, after he actually MEETS the other hepers he is NO WORSE than the damn people are. He assumed they would be savages, uneducated. Um.. why? What makes you so special? He’s a hypocrite! When push came to shove, he was willing to sacrifice everyone else for his own damn skin. HELLO! There are more of YOU out there and you’re just gonna leave them to die? What the… !  And don’t get me started on Ashley June.

I give Kudos for the attempt at creating a novel that is different then the norm but if you’re gonna step out of element, please make is SOMEWHAT realistic. And consistent. Don’t make events happen to strengthen your plot if it’s inconsistent with the rest of the story and character traits. Give us some back story to help us understand this world you’re creating. Maybe all these things will be addressed in the second novel but I am not interested enough to read it.

Overall, I didn’t like it. It took everything in me to finish it and when I did, I just about threw myself a party.

It DOES sound good, right? It had so much potential. I really wish I would have read more reviews on this before picking it up.
