"Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life."

Review

Have you ever read a book so incredibly frustrating, it’s difficult to determine whether or not you liked it or didn’t? Where there were several things you REALLY did like but there was ONE thing you didn’t and it holds you back? One of those books where you have to chant “DON’T THROW THE KINDLE!” over and over again?

For me, Runes is that book.

This is well written and nicely paced. Fantastic world building. The lore on Norse Mythology was just fascinating. I liked the mystery behind who exactly Torin (and others) were. The Runes. (Which yes, did remind of TMI.) Pretty much everything revolving around the lore and world, was just awesome. I really couldn’t get enough and wanted to know MORE. (really, MORE since we only just brushed on everything towards the end) The plot was entertaining, engaging and mysterious at the same time. We know there is obviously something that makes Lorraine (Raine) special, but not what exactly. We don’t know why Torin is there or what he is. Why everyone seems to be forgetting shit left and right and WHY Raine is able to see what she can. ALL fun.

The really enjoyed the secondary characters. I really like Cora, Raine’s best friend. She was funny, snarky and just one of those people you’d want as your best friend. Andris and his entourage. Most of the book I didn’t understand his role, and still don’t really, but I liked him all the same. Eirik was OK. Other than being “the best guy friend” and at a point, love interest, there isn’t anything remarkable about him.

*insert dark cloud here*

NOW. Raine. OH…Raine, Raine.. I don’t think I have ever disliked a protagonist this much. Although she was funny, witty and likeable -at times- I couldn’t get over how incredibly selfish she was. Her indecision regarding Torin and Eirik was irritating, and frankly, wrong. Also, when her dad returned, she just kind of.. left. NOT.OK. When things started being explained to her, she was more or less disregarding what was being told her. How many times does something NEED to be explained? As for Torin; I’ll admit, he is everything a girl would want to “swoon” over. And some of their… encounters, were steamy and hot, but I just didn’t BUY it. Seems to me that a lonely, centuries old fella falling for a love sick teen is all the rage these days.

The ending left us at a big cliff hanger. I wish things were explained in more detail too, since we are left hanging in the balance. There was this HUGE build up and then… nothing.

Overall~ I really enjoyed this, despite my like of Raine. I’m curious enough to read the next one and find out what happens.

I did enjoy it some. I would probably like it more if things were wrapped up a little more at the end. Hope you like it!

I’m reading this for a book tour soon, I’m glad that the world building is pretty good at least!

I was the exact opposite as you. Liked Raine quite a bit, Could not stand Cora. At all haha. And I was completely fascinated with Torin. The ending….seriously almost threw my Kindle out the window. I think I even yelled at it. I’m really not crazy…lol

She has a lot of traits I LOVE. She’s funny, witty and bold (she also reminds me a lot of Katy from the Lux series) BUT, there are a few things I can’t seem to get over and her selfishness nagged at me the ENTIRE time. I did like Torin; he had this.. mysterious aura about him I wanted to figure out; there was just something… off. I can’t explain it.

And I agree about the ending. Throw-able material right there HAHAHA 🙂

Oh boy, I know exactly what you mean by a book you can’t make up your mind on. (and ones that make you want to tear your hair out) Beautiful Creatures was that book for me. Sounds like you enjoyed a majority of this but the MC was a big problem. Too bad, I find that if the MC is hard to like the entire is. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
