A girl looking to escape her past in New York City ends up on the run from a dangerous conspiracy in this sizzling, high-stakes novel.
When seventeen-year-old Liva came to New York City, all she wanted was to escape the painful memories of her past and finally find a fresh start. Her hopes for a new future were dashed the moment she became the sole witness to a brutal murder. When she's taken into police custody - supposedly for her own protection - she realizes something isn't right, but it's too late. Soon, bullets start flying, and Liva realizes that she is not just a witness, but the target - and she needs to escape before it's too late.
With the help of a sexy car thief that she met at the station, Liva manages to get away from the massacre unharmed, but now the two of them are alone in New York, trying to outrun and outwit the two killers who will stop at nothing to find them. Liva and Jay are living on the edge, but when you're on the edge, there's a long way to fall.
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
When requesting this book for review, I didn’t realize that this was one I had previously been excited for (hello, cover change) so when I finally put two and two together, I bumped it up on my TBR list.
Mystery, thriller and suspense has been one of the many genres that have a steady incline on my favorites list. I love trying to decipher the small clues; piecing together to form the bigger picture. All the while, biting my nails from all the suspense. Out of Control was very fast paced, action packed and perfect for quick read. Sadly, I figured out the HUGE plot twist pretty early, so the BIG REVEAL was pretty sub-par.
While Liva was hard to connect with and even LIKE at times, I loved how resourceful she was. She is smart, witty and cool in a tough situation. However, she comes with a lot of baggage, and while I can kind of see where she is coming from, it wasn’t explored enough for me to FULLY understand and stand behind her. It’s like it was there and we JUST HAD TO DEAL WITH IT. Also, she is very quick to judge based on stereotypes and that kind of bothered me. Especially when Jay threw it back at her for good measure and she was offended.
Jay, on the other hand, I liked. Even though we don’t get his full story right away, I felt like he had signification amount of depth to his character. He was supportive, smart, and has such a big heart. I would like to think that I would help someone, no questions asked, in this situation but I’m not sure I could. I never felt like he wanted to be the KNIGHT to save the DAMSEL IN DISTRESS; he was just a nice guy.
As for their romance? Well, it had an insta-love feel to it, but I can usually overlook it in this type of plot. Feelings are intensified in these situations, so I can see it. I am just curious how their relationship continues when all the running and danger is over. Still, I adored their shared moments together.
Minor issues aside, I do recommend it if you are looking for a quick read that is full of action and suspense.
