This is a stand alone novel that is an adult spin-off of the Lux Series You do not need to read a Lux book to read Obsession and vice versa.
He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.
Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.
Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.
Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?
She has done it again.
I always head into a JLA book, knowing that I will love it. There is just something about this woman’s writing. She brings such originality to her books, her characters are all unique, hilarious and real. And she can write some HOT scenes. So, there was no doubt in my mind that I would love this.
And loved it I did.
To this day, the Lux series is my favorite that Jennifer has written. This could be because it was the first book from hers I picked up, so it holds a special place in my heart. But I digress. When I saw that she was writing an ADULT spin-off, I was beside myself. Yes, it’s been almost a year since publication but since she is just so amazing and I knew I would walk away loving this, I didn’t want it to end… That sounds stupid when I write it but, the meaning is there nevertheless.
I loved that we FINALLY get an inside look on the other side. From day one, it was pretty much drilled in our heads that the Arum are the bad guys and the Luxen, were good. But things aren’t so black and white. There is good and evil to both sides. Sure, if you read the Lux series you kinda figured that out before hand, but I was on this.. denial streak, thinking there were only a few bad seeds. Now? I am struggling to figure out which side I want to be on. It gives you a whole new perspective knowing both sides. Thanks, Jen.
As always, I was instantly connected to the characters. Ahh, Hunter. I don’t usually start out my reviews discussing the male lead but holy hotness. At was a little put off by him at first though, I will admit. He’s ego is hard to swallow and that arrogance can really piss me off sometimes. He reminded me a lot of Daemon, but in a more crude, ADULT way, almost as a… taste for what Daemon could be in 10 years. I don’t think there could BE another Alien as arrogant, hilarious and sexy. But he has this.. tender side and he’s all alpha, in the best way. There is just so much more to Hunter than meets the eye, and we slowly get to see him, as Serena breaks his walls down. I just adored him to pieces.
Sorry Daemon, you have been replaced.
So Serena. While she is probably one of my favorite main characters that Jennifer has written, I did see a lot of Katy in here. She’s fierce, protective and not someone to be walked on. I loved that she could go toe-to-toe with Hunter, but knew her limits and when it was best just to
run walk away. She was level-headed and handled the abrupt change to her life well. There was just one small thing at the end that was just SO STUPID but, you have to admire her courage.
So we have Serena and Hunter. And then we have SerneaandHunter. Whew. Talk about sexual tension. OFF.THE.CHARTS. It’s not just that though. It’s the banter, the joking and just the love and blossoms throughout the book. Seriously, I love these two. I know this is a stand-alone but I would LOVE to see more of these two.
The plot was very thrilling and action packed. There are very few things that make me uncomfortable; violence is not one of them. And Jen does not hold back. Hunter is ruthless and pretty freaking backass.
My Peeve- The only thing that I can even consider a peeve was the similarities to Kate and Daemon. Maybe it’s just me though.
Overall- Uh, you can guess. I loved it. Jen has once again brought us well written, sexy book full of characters you love. You don’t necessarily HAVE to read this if you read the Lux series, but I HIGHLY recommend you do (well, us ADULTS that read the Lux series).
