"Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever."

Review

I’ve been seeing this book around Goodreads and the like for a few months now. Pretty much every review I have read screams at me to READ.IT.NOW. You MUST.READ.THIS. For some reason, this book has made me nervous since the first time I saw it. Maybe because all the reviews stated how emotional it was? I’m not really sure, I can’t really put my finger on exactly WHY. All I know is that I have been a BIG CHICKEN to read it. Then, I saw it on netgalley. So, it must be a sign, right? I didn’t know exactly what to expect going into this. I had my assumptions, I assure you, but what I got isn’t what I thought.

There isn’t much to be said about this book that hasn’t been already. It’s Dark. Disturbing. Emotional. Sad. Heartbreaking. Beautiful. You’ll find this said in pretty much every review. And it’s all true.

The writing is beautiful. She crafted real yet flawed characters. Although I felt the book was painfully slow at first, I couldn’t help but be draw in and completely wrapped up in the story. Wanting to know how and why Holder has such a … HOLD on Sky. Who this guy was and what his ISSUE was. Wanting to know what secrets are being kept. At one point, I pretty much brushed all this aside, just enjoying the relationship develop between the two. There was always this.. “Warning, warning” sign flashing off in the distance, reminding me not to forget that there is something dark and heartbreaking Holder is keeping to himself. Though I didn’t know HOW heartbreaking it was at the time.

As for Sky, we couldn’t have asked for a more funny, witty strong protagonist. The things she went through would probably break most people, but it just goes to show how incredibly strong she is. I adored her relationship with Six, her best friend, Karen and of course, Holder. She always created these awkward, funny moments that I couldn’t help but laugh at. Holder is.. well, I don’t really know how to explain him. Honestly, I initially disliked him. He came off TOO strong. It didn’t take long for my opinion to change and as I said before, I enjoyed their relationship development. He is perfect for Sky. They balance each other well and though they both had their own issues, it’s clear they need each other.

I caught on pretty quick to.. who Sky was. It was honestly kind of obvious.. It still did nothing to soften the blow though. That was all I was prepared for. I wasn’t prepared to be shocked in the way I was. And once the initial plummet started, all you could do was hold on and ride it out. Everything that happened was dark. I mean, DARK. And the heartbreaking twists just kept coming and coming. Some parts, I confess, made me ill, angry and almost not finish-able. This book is NOT for everyone.

Overall~ I lived it. Beautiful, heart wrenching story. I highly recommend it.

I’m glad to hear you liked it! I snapped this up on Kindle when everyone was saying how good it was but haven’t got round to reading it yet. I love the sound of Sky as a character. Strong witty females are what I hope for! I’ll definitely get round to this soon after reading your review 😀
