One Star

The Valefar boy tricked Ivy Taylor into kissing him, but he took much more than a kiss - he stole her soul and left her within inches of death. By surviving, Ivy is drawn into the conflict between the Martis and the Valefar. The war between these two immortal forces has raged for millennia without distraction. Until now.

Ivy is an anomaly-she is the only person who has ever walked away from a demon kiss alive. Her survival gives her unique and deadly abilites. Too powerful to ignore, Ivy is a threat to both armies. These two ancient enemies will stop at nothing to kill the seventeen-year-old.

Surviving is nothing new for headstrong Ivy, but her survival has never depended on another person before. This time it does. And if she misplaces her trust, she's dead. To her horror, she starts falling in love at the worst possible time-with the enemy. He appears to be protecting her. But she can't be certain if he is trying to help her, or help himself to her power. For Ivy, trusting the right person is the difference between love and survival, or a deadly demon kiss

Yes. You saw it right. 1 star.

It seems that lately I have been constantly adding books to my “Disappointments list”. This one is no exception. To be frank, its vying for one of the top ten slots. I made it to 61% (not exactly sure what page that is) before I finally called it quits.

The Goodreads blurb I pasted up there makes this book sound interesting, yes? And it is- to a point. It started out with a bang; throwing us right into action. The whole concept is fascinating. Ward takes the whole Good/Evil-Angel/Demon thing, shakes it up and creates a new world of Prophesy’s and “forbidden love”. Sadly, the attempt to make this book different and stand out was just one of its down falls.

The writing is choppy, inconsistent and repetitive. It seemed like everything was written in a “copy and paste” fashion. The history and descriptions of the Martis/Valefar was overwhelming. It was hard to grasp because everything came out rather quickly. Then later, we would learn something else that is IMPORTANT but was initially left out. As for the plot; was there one? This sounds terrible, but I couldn’t figure out what it was! It was all over the place! There were several times I was left feeling like “Wait… what?” The focus of the story would change almost on every chapter. The pacing was terrible and the story lacked a solid, strong flow. As for the characters, there isn’t much I can say about them. I really didn’t care for any of them.

The ONE thing that irritated me most was the how inconsistent everything was. (This is just one example) Ivy is told that once the Martis (good guys) figured out who she is, they would kill her. On site. They were ordered to kill her (orders they supposedly couldn’t fight) Ironically enough, every Martis she came in contact with, didn’t. Um. why? Well, because they are her friiiiineds people. ALSO- one of the traits of the Valefar (bad guys) is that their lust for human souls basically consumes them. YET… yet, there is one that “fights it”. Why? Because he loooooves her. See my issue? If you are going to have SPECIFIC details explained about what and who these people are, don’t make exceptions. OK, maybe one. But not every.single.person.

Maybe the story got better and the plot thickens as it progressed. It’s possible things get better and everything clicks. I don’t know. I couldn’t bring myself to finish and find out.

Overall- This book had so much promise. The potential to be an outstanding book is there, but due to the poor writing, lack of a developed plot and characters, it wasn’t. Such a disappointment. DNF
