Hey Hey! Welcome to another Random Rants and Rambling; a discussion feature dedicated to all topics but generally book related
As a blogger, we run into varying reactions when REAL LIFE meets the blog. From intrigue to lack of interest, there have always been the same misconceptions, though, and I wanted to share some of those with you.
*These are from personal experience.
What’s the big deal – you talk about books?
Um, hello, that’s a big deal on its own. What people don’t realize is that his a community. A community of passionate people dedicated to spreading the love of books, discussing books and finding people with the same enthusiasm, love, and dedication. My best friends are bloggers and I would have never had met them if I didn’t decide to create this blog.
Also, it’s hard sometimes! There’s a lot of work behind the scenes…
Ohh, I think I get it. But it can’t be THAT hard, c’mon.
Ha. Ha. hahaha. OKAY.
This has always bothered me, and some have legit offended me. Like reading, reviewing, making graphics, promoting is EASY and ANYONE can do it. I’m not saying it takes a special type of snowflake – but it takes some level of skill, dedication, time and patience. Essentially, we are a free marketing team.
There have been countless polls taken and the majority of people state that bloggers are the reason they buy a book. We are important!
You blog? What do you blog about? Oh.. aren’t you (insert insult here) to read those?
THIS MAKES ME RAGE. Who are you to tell me what I should/should not read? Yes, I read YA, M/M romance AND diverse books, including LGBT. Don’t like it? FINE. But don’t judge me for it.
Awesome, FREE BOOKS! I love free books!
Yeah… no. If you are in this for free books, you are wrong. #sorrynotsorry
Sure, we get books but those books come with a small yet significant responsibility. Either to read and review. Talk about the book, share the book or take pictures of the book. It’s not just HEY HERE YOU GO! It’s a HEY HERE YOU GO, PLEASE (enter prearranged agreement here). Sure, we don’t review ALL the books we get, at least I don’t, but if you don’t do anything, authors and publisher take note.
I still buy books. Not all my of my books are free. Do you want free books? Go to a library.
“So, I’m writing this book…”
That’s awesome! And I would love to hear about it – but before you do, please understand that sadly, I am not a publisher. I cannot publish your book. Do I know the process? Yes. Could I give you advice? Absolutely. Do I know freelance editors? YES. But, I cannot publish your book.
We Are Greedy
This is new – something that has been spreading around due to recent happenings at events. I hate this stigma, and I wish one (or three) bad seeds didn’t set the tone for the ENTIRE community.
We Make $THE MONEY$
Because all bloggers are rich? I legit laugh every time. EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. I make money off Affiliate links. Maybe enough to buy ONE BOOK for a giveaway everyone two months. But that’s it. If people make money, it’s because they have a side business that correlates with their blog. There’s this stigma about book bloggers making money that I personally don’t agree with but hey, it is what it is.
- What are some misconceptions or assumptions you’ve dealt with as a book blogger?
