Fiery French chef Élise Philippe is having a seriously bad day. Not only have the opening day plans for her beloved café fallen apart, but Sean O'Neil is back in town, and looking more delectable than ever. Last summer, they shared an electrifying night together…and the memories have Élise really struggling to stick to her one-night-only rule! Her head knows that eventually Sean will be leaving, so all she can do is try to ignore her heart before she spontaneously combusts with lust.
Being back in Vermont—even temporarily—is surgeon Sean O'Neil's worst nightmare. For Sean, returning home to the Snow Crystal Resort means being forced to confront the reasons and the guilt he feels about rejecting his family's rural lifestyle years ago. But discovering that Élise has settled in Vermont and still sets his blood racing is a very welcome distraction! Thinking he can persuade her into a replay of last summer is tempting, but remembering how good they are together is going to make walking away more difficult than he could imagine…
I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
There are times when I wanted to escape into a book that has a sweet and beautiful romance. Suddenly Last Summer was the perfect book to sate that need.
I will say right off, even though this is the second book in a series, it can be read a standalone. I didn’t even realize that this was a series until I started reading it (which is probably my fault). The characters from the first book, Sleigh Bells in the Snow, are present in Suddenly Last Summer, but I never got the feeling that I missed anything. I would like to go back and read it though, because I loved Jackson!
Suddenly Last Summer is Sean’s book. Sean, is a successful surgeon living in the city and could care less about relationships. Feeling as though if he were to be in one, he would have to sacrifice himself. Elise, the french chef that works for the O’Neils, has been burned in the past by love and vows to never give her heart to anyone. But after a hot night last Summer together, neither one can get the other out of their minds. Which would make for the perfect set up for a fling, right?
Sean was really hard to like at first. He comes off as arrogant, selfish and a lady’s man. Which essentially, he is. What’s refreshing though that he owns it and is upfront with everyone woman about it. He doesn’t want love or a relationship. He loves his job, is passionate about helping people and doesn’t want to “answer” to anyone or sacrifice himself. But once his walls started to crack down, you can see that there is more to this than we realize. He is a family man at heart, and just wants acceptance from his Grandfather. Elisa is such a fun, feist and passionate woman. I love her loyalty to the O’Neil’s, especially Walter. She is determined to repay Jackson for what he has done for her, and has dedicated herself to making it up to him.
Their chemistry is off the charts! The attraction is there, obviously – and I loved their banter and flirting. But watching these two get close and bring the walls down was so beautiful to read. They are both so passionate, loving people, and both deserved to be loved.
I also loved the family dynamics. With big families, there are is always pressure and riffs, but there is always love too. I loved how they accepted Elise into the fold and made her part of the family. The set up was nice for Tyler’s book, and I am so curious about his story!
Suddenly Last Summer is a sweet, steamy romance that all fans of romance will enjoy. With fun, feisty and loving characters, to the strong family dynamics and the setting. Perfect Summer read. I highly recommend it.
