Rating- 4.5 of 5 stars!
Amaliya wakes under the forest floor, disoriented, famished and confused. She digs out of the shallow grave and realizes she is hungry…
.. in a new, horrific, unimaginable way…
Sating her great hunger, she discovers that she is now a vampire, the bloodthirsty creature of legend. She has no choice but to flee from her old life and travels across Texas. Her new hunger spurs her to leave a wake of death and blood behind her as she struggles with her new nature.
All the while, her creator is watching. He is ancient, he is powerful, and what’s worse is that he’s a necromancer. He has the power to force the dead to do his bidding. Amaliya realizes she is but a pawn in a twisted game, and her only hope for survival is to seek out one of her own kind.
But if Amaliya finds another vampire, will it mean her salvation… or her death?
It’s been awhile since I immersed myself in a really good adult vampire/urban fantasy novel. Pretty When She Dies was the perfect book to break that ice. I loved this book! Vampires, necromancers (HELLO, awesome) humor and a kick ass chick you wouldn’t want to piss off.
Waking up disoriented– from her own grave– Amaliya has no recollection of who or where she is. As her new instincts kick in, she finds herself at a party where things turn horrific quite fast. The next day, her Professor- now maker- informs her that he has turned her and she is now on her own. Confused and scared, Amaliya leaves to find help. After a stint of bad luck and a few bodies later, she meets the Master of Austin. With an array of other characters, Amaliya must learn to control her powers, her hunger and ultimately, save her life and family.
This book is by far, one of these best Vampire novels I have read. It’s gritty, gruesome and full of such real and troubled characters. It’s fast pace kept me engrossed and biting my nails through some kick ass fights and creepy ass “creatures”. Told primarily from Amaliya’s POV (third person) but later switches to other characters. Normally, I am not a fan of this– but here, it was necessary to see the bigger picture and I loved it! I enjoyed learning about the back story of all the characters. We don’t know everything right away and I liked how we are slowly informed about everyone. And it’s gory!
Vampires should be, amiright?
Amaliya was seriously kick ass. With her shitty un-supportive family (save for a few members) and terrible luck, she had a lot of odds against her. She smart, witty and tough. All she wanted was to find her place, not knowing she would find it as a vampire. It was difficult watching her trying to come to terms with her new life and struggling to understand the ways of being a vampire. Not to mention, learning about her horrific yet very cool powers she received from her maker. Speaking of her maker, The Summoner, was one twisted sadistic SOB. Seriously, he gave me the willies. Turning Amaliya for is own amusement; then stalking her in his own game of cat and mouse. AND! He’s a necromancer. A vampire necromancer! Seriously, doesn’t get scarier than that. Cian, the master of Austin, is a sexy and smart guy. Having issues himself about where he fits in, longing for his human life. He is engaged to a human, Samantha, and tries (a little too hard) to be human. I like how him and Amaliya were a lot a like, in the aspect of where they fit and belong, but opposite enough to bring out the best in each other and challenge one another. Their scenes together were steamy and HOT.
Along with Amaliya, The Summoner and Cian– there is an array of other charters. Samantha– Cian’s fiance; who I wanted to punch in the face on more than one occasion. Roberto; Cian’s human servant. Also, punch worthy. I loved the banter between him and Samantha though. Both wanted Amaliya gone, for their own reasons. Amaliya’s grandmother and cousin, who turned out be to hilarious and great supporters of Amaliya. And SO MANY more.
Overall~ Loooved it.. Full of gory action scenes, creepy zombies, betrayal, love and lust, Pretty When She Dies is a must read. Seriously. If you haven’t read this yet– do it!

Excerpt from Book 1
When she began to stir from her deep slumber, she had no idea she was buried under several feet of moist, dark earth. Curled into a tight ball with one hand over her face, she shivered as her brain slowly switched on. Flashes of random memories full of distorted images burst through her mind.
Time to wake up, a voice whispered.
Her eyelids fluttered.
Before she could fully awaken, her body was seized tight in a spasm of pain, contorting in on itself as her hands trembled around her face. The seizure released her and, slowly, she opened her eyes.
Darkness greeted her.
Trembling, she strained to see into the blackness that enshrouded her. She could barely make out the outline of her fingers curled over her face. Something heavy and moist was pressing down on her.
Suddenly claustrophobic, she thrust her left arm upward in a desperate attempt to throw off whatever was covering her.
Dirt poured into the tiny space around her face and filled her mouth and nose. Terrified, she plunged her arm into the earth, trying to push it away. She tried to roll onto her back and shoved upward with her other hand. Warm, wet earth pressed down all around her body.
For a horrible moment, she had no sense of up or down and feared she was frantically tunneling deeper into the ground. Shoving fear aside, she clawed at the dirt, desperately trying to free herself.
To her relief, her hands and arms broke through the soil and into the empty space above her. Managing to get her feet under her, she shoved her body through the earth. She broke the surface of the forest floor and stood, blinking in the moonlight, standing in what was left of the hole that had been her prison. She raised trembling hands to sweep back her raven hair. Her blue-gray eyes blinking hard, she tried to take a deep breath. She choked and gagged, then fell onto her hands as she threw up streams of muddy liquid. Coughing, she wiped her mouth with her dirty fingers and let out a whimper.
Around her, the night whispered softly. Tiny animals scurried through the underbrush around her. An owl hooted in a tree nearby. The moon shone down brightly, its full face glowing in the sky. Falling onto her hip, she lay in silence for a long moment.
Try as she might, she could not draw her thoughts together. She wasn’t even certain of her name. How she had come to be buried alive in the forest was beyond her comprehension.
Pulling her legs slowly out of the grave that had entrapped her, she lay on the ground shivering.
Her long, milky-white fingers clawed at the ground beside her and she looked at her hand in dazed confusion.
Need to go home, she thought.
