Arrow of the Mist by Christina Mercer
Publication date: March 21st 2013
Genre: YA Fantasy
Terror strikes the Celtic inspired kingdom of Nemetona when barbed roots breach the veil of a forbidden land and poison woodsmen, including 15-year-old Lia’s beloved father. Lia and three others embark on a quest to the forbidden land of Brume to gather ingredients for the cure. But after her elder kinsman is attacked and poisoned, she and her cousin, Wynn, are forced to finish the quest on their own.
Lia relies on her powerful herbal wisdom and the memorized pages of her late grandmother’s Grimoire for guidance through a land of soul-hungry shades, trickster creatures, and uncovered truths about the origin of Brume and her family’s unexpected ties to it. The deeper they trek into the land, the stronger Lia’s untapped gift as a tree mage unfolds. When she discovers the enchanted root’s maker, it forces her to question everything about who she is and what is her destiny. Ultimately she must make a terrible choice: keep fighting to save her father and the people of the lands or join with the power behind the deadly roots to help nature start anew
Fantasy, while always a fun escape, is always a hit or miss for me. There is always so much to discover and take in that you can be overwhelmed (and sometimes, not) but all the complexity. Arrow of the Mist is one fascinating, original, beautifully written story that pulls in you from page 1.
After an attack on her father and sudden illness, Lia sets off with her Granda, cousin Wynn and family friend– into the forbidden lands of the Brume to find a cure for the poison that has plagued her father and other members of their village. Things go awry and Lia and Wynn must face their journey alone and discover the hidden truths about their heritage, solve several different riddles and ultimately, find the ingredients for the cure.
This book was.. fascinating. (I sound like a broken record!) I was immediately drawn in. I am not one for historical dialogue but it fits this perfectly and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are so many riddles to take in– but honestly, they all started to blend together. I continued throughout the book wracking my brain and trying to solve them all. The pacing was slow for my taste but since the book isn’t too long, it was still a pretty quick read. Typically, with third person narration, I’m unable to attach myself to the characters, and while I wasn’t as attached to Lia as I could have been, I was wholly invested in her story and her journey.
This world is filled with magical elements and dark, sinister creatures. Not all are bad, like the Faeries and most of the dwarfs. And other than all the creatures, the magical aspect was different and refreshing. With plants, herbs and stones. There isn’t too much depth on the world as a whole. A few different villages were mentioned and the history of Lia’s village– but quite frankly, it’s wasn’t that important.
Our protagonist, Lia- is one of the strongest MC I’ve read about in a long time. She lives a simple life with her family and isn’t hung up on marriage and.. “girly” things like the rest of the girls in her village. She isn’t highly admired by most people, and I love how she takes all of the ridicule in stride. Can’t be easy to be the black sheep in a small village. She is strong, loyal and brave. Her knowledge of all the plants and herbs was pretty interesting too. She proves more than once that she would do anything for her family. And I admire that. On their journey for the cure, they learn and discover SO much about themselves and their family. It’s complicated yet fun and I was thrown more than once.
Overall~ Great escape into a magical world that will sate anyone’s love for fantasy! Arrow is the Mist is fun, original and overall a great read.
