Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together.
Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.
Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.
First of all – I have to go on and talk about the ending of The Heart of Betrayal. It isn’t like me to discuss the ending of a book before anything else – but ARE YOU EVEN KIDDING ME.
I am one of those that love a good cliff-hanger. That feeling when you are holding on to each word – only to realize it’s the end!? Frustratingly amazing. And THIS ENDING left me utterly breathless.
I adored the first book in this series, The Kiss of Deception. I also listened to that one on audio – and was captivated from beginning to end. The Heart of Betrayal was no different. It has many twists, heartbreak, death and full of passionate characters that leap off the page and dare I say, swoony moments. Pearson has created a master piece with these books, and I am very fortunate to have read them.
The Heart of Betrayal starts right off where The Kiss of Deception left off. Lia and Rafe are at the mercy of Venda and their tyrant of a leader, the Komisar. Lia must use her wits to survive in the mist of discovering secrets many thought long dead about Venda, her country and other people she thought she well. Quite honestly – there was never a dull moment.
Lia is by far one of my favorite characters to date. I love smart, strong and passionate heroines and Lia’s bad-assery push her to the top of that list. She is witty – and plays the political game well; yet, she has a huge heart and compassion for the people of Venda that made my heart well and break at the same time.
Obviously being a sequel, there are many things that I CANNOT discuss for fear of spoiling – but even if this was the first book, there isn’t much to discuss without spoiling anyway because it’s laden with twists and discovered secrets. It’s a must read – one that will leave you breathless and with a massive book hangover. The Heart of Betrayal is a must read - one that will leave you breathless and with a massive… Click To Tweet
The Narration –
Perfect. I am happy to say that ALL narrators were listed – since they weren’t for The Kiss of Deception. Emily is fantastic as Lia; putting the right amount of emotion into her voice at the right time. This is huge for me – because if it’s an emotional moment and there is NO emotion form the narrator? Ruins the whole thing. In any case – I love that we get Rafe’s and Kaden’s POV again because being in their head is interesting and adds another layer to the story. We also get a few chapters of Pauline and while they were few and far in between, I liked that we got to see what was going on back in Morrighan.
If you have not started this series yet – WHAT, BY THE GODS, ARE YOU WAITING FOR? One of my favorite books read this year — I highly recommend it!
