Secrets…

They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas…

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined

Over the past few weeks, I have been riding the contemporary wave. I needed a good paranormal book to break me out, so I was so excited to start Keep You From Harm. Not only for that reason, mind you. However, this book was not at all what I was expecting. In a good way.

I loved how Keep You From Harm was more contemporary with paranormal elements. The two blended in real well and I was really happy with the way everything played out. Raielle’s secret wasn’t held from US for too long; and i thought her “gift/curse” was pretty fascinating. There is a lot more to it than what I initially thought, so discovering more about her abilities and how it works was one of my favorite aspects of the book. Not only that, we have the mystery behind her mother’s death and all the people connected to the storyline; as well as why she kept the secrets she did. I was on my toes throughout the book trying to figure everything out.

Raielle is a strong, independent and loving girl. Her home life wasn’t the best, but she always made do. It was so difficult for her to adjust to her new life with her brother and his family. She stayed pretty levelheaded while discovering all the secrets about her family, especially her mother. As for Lucas, I liked him too, although his hot and cold persona towards Raielle was really frustrating. His home life was sad too; so i understood why he wanted to keep Raielle away from that. He was very accepting of Raielle and her gift too and probably the only one that didn’t want to take advantage of her. I loved these two together. Although their connection was pretty instant; it even had me thinking that was REALLY important to the storyline, since it usually IS with paranormal romance.

As I said, there were a lot of different mysteries to unravel. Everything was connected in some way and Debra did a remarkable job weaving them all together. As more and more pieced together, you start to see the importance of trivial things that initally weren’t eye-catching. I love mysteries like that! Also, it was refreshing to have the main character with a mysterious ability and not the love interest.

We have an array of secondary characters, both good and bad. I loved Miles and Gwen. Those two, aside from Lucas, really cared for Raielle and accepted  her. I initially liked Kyle and thought his intentions to find his sister, get to know her and care for her, were all very sweet. Yet, after everything started to unravel and tragedy struck home, I was second guessing this. I just don’t trust him. I can’t help but think since he KNEW about what was to happen, to the family and what their family could do, was too convenient. Granted, someone else WAS to blame for everything that had happened to Raielle’s mother, I just can’t shake the feeling. Her sister-in-law was a piece of work too. I didn’t like her from the get-go and I feel confident I won’t like her, at all. Kyle’s dad too, was a sick bastard.

My Peeve- Honestly, just “first half of the book” Lucas. I was just as hot and cold with him as he was with Raielle. I just wanted him to get this shit together and figure out what he wanted.

Overall- I loved it! The mystery, the romance (well, eventually) and how everything ties together was done so well. After that small cliffhanger ending, I can’t WAIT to see what happens next. Highly recommend.
