It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.
Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.
Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.
Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.
I have had this book on my to-read list and wish list for a few months. I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner.
I love it when an author takes a step out of the norm, and writes a book completely out of the ordinary. This isn’t your normal angel book here. This book is dark. It is disturbing. It is SO.GOOD.
Susan Ee creates a dark, disturbing post-apocalyptic world that you never, ever want to be a part of. Her writing is smooth, strong and powerful. She took angel lore and shook it up, creating a beautiful masterpiece that will keep you on edge from page 1. We have death. Cannibals. Army resistance, and a little romance, (which wasn’t too overwhelming). The pacing was perfect; flowing from scene to scene perfectly, with the right amount of action to satisfy and not overwhelm. It does tend to get pretty graphic, with some things I personally haven’t seen in a young adult novel, but it didn’t sway me from the story. If anything, it made me want to learn more about WHY.and HOW these things are happening.
I loved Penryn. She is strong and fearless. There were times things were NOT going in her favor, yet, she never gave up. She never swayed from her goal to rescue her sister. I felt for her, having to deal with the decisions she made regarding her schizophrenic mother. I loved her a Raffe’s relationship. Everything that they had seen and went though, was horrific, but they were able to keep a little humor going and made an awesome team. Their relationship started rocky, but developed beautifully over their journey to San Francisco. And little Paige? Heartbreaking. And scary.
My only frustrations? There was very little explanation regarding WHY the angels started this war. The only clue is the conversation between Penryn and Raffe in the hotel room (about the messenger and Gabriel). Also, as for the gruesome things in the basement and the angels specimens, a little light on that would have went a long way.
I am anxiously waiting for book 2!
