In this second book in "New York Times" and "USA Today" bestselling author Cora Carmack s New Adult, Texas-set Rusk University series, which began with "All Lined Up," a young woman discovers that you can t only fight for what you believe in sometimes you have to fight for what you love.
Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.
Environmental issues, civil rights, corrupt corporations, and politicians you name it, she s probably been involved in a protest. When her latest cause lands her in jail overnight, she meets Silas Moore. He s in for a different kind of fighting. And though he s arrogant and infuriating, she can t help being fascinated with him. Yet another lost cause.
Football and trouble are the only things that have ever come naturally to Silas. And it s trouble that lands him in a cell next to do-gooder Dylan. He s met girls like her before fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn t think he s broken, and he definitely doesn t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Until, that is, his anger issues and rash decisions threaten the only thing he really cares about: his spot on the Rusk University football team. Dylan might just be the perfect girl to help.
Because Silas Moore needs some fixing after all.
Whew, Cora stepped up her game in All Broke Down! For real.
I remember reading, and rather *loving* the first book in the Rusk University series but can’t say what it was that stopped me from reading on. I do know, however, that I wasn’t the biggest Silas fan and let’s be real, who was? In any case, I am always awed when an author can take a character I rather dislike and redeem them in such a way my heart soars.
And yeah, that’s what happened.
Silas is that ass hole friend that comes off too arrogant, too big for his britches; showing everyone he doesn’t have a care in the world. When reality is, he is tearing up inside, beyond insecure and just scared. What happened with Levi in the first book View Spoiler » Busted for drugs « Hide Spoiler really brought Silas down, forcing him to wake up and straighten things out. In his own way, he hit rock bottom and was desperate to fix all the things that had gone wrong and upon meeting Dylan, got his salvation.
Dont’ get me wrong – it’s not one of those I-met-a-girl-and-now-I’m-cured situations. But there is something powerful in finding, and knowing, when someone believes in you and loves you for WHO YOU ARE, assholeness and all. And Silas found that.
Dylan, with insecurities and issues of her own, SEE’s more than what Silas shows. Of course, she was drawn to him because of his looks (and she is rather annoying with pointing out how beautiful he is ALL THE TIME). While she isn’t my favorite NA heroine, I liked her. I liked what she helped Dylan moved on from. Helped him channel his anger into something more positive. And I liked that she did all this while learning how to deal with her own issues at the same time. I do think her insecurities and issues took a back seat to Silas though. Not saying that what she went through is any less important, but this felt more like Silas’ story rather than Dylan + Silas story. So more often than not, I found her chapters and narration rather annoying and interruptive.
That being said, Dylan and Silas have instant HOT IN YOUR FACE chemistry and it was sexy as hell. This whole book was a lot sexier than the first and considering I was listening to the audio? Whew, hot mama.
This was the first book narrated by both Kate DeLane & Teddy Hamilton and I loved them! They were perfect the roles they read – and I’m looking forward to more from them!
All in all – I loved it! I’m beyond excited to revisit this series in All Played Out and I hope beyond hope, we get more Silas and Dylan in the future. If you haven’t started this series yet, I highly recommend you do!
